I've fallen back off the rails again. After not ordering a tune for over a fortnight I've just blown $350 in the last week on new tunes. That's demented. Help me.

CABRERA: Voodoo Love (Jesse Garcia remix)
CONGAMAN: Baila Rumbero
FUNK, Andy: Uh Yeh Yeh (Gabriell D'Andrea remixes)
GROOVE GARCIA VS JIMMY ANDREWS: Mainland Spain Vol 1 (tribal club remix)
RIGHT ON BROTHERS feat CHARLES GORE: Circulo Dos Chifres

Those were among the better finds...picked up that Aviators tune, 3AM and that Reach tune on good advice of Soulgood reviews.

Interested to see how the Aviators tune goes...not sure at this stage...but it was in stock and who am I to argue! I can't resist!

Hope everyone's weekend was good....last exam tomorrow. God maybe I'll get a job someday.
Hope to catch a Mobin/Bill show soon.

P.S. is the Shameless Self Promotion only for you guys or can us little fish drum up some support too?

Take care...Ben James.

Hi Ben, I split your post to keep the front page tidy - hope you don't mind. It's been 4 weeks since my last order, and I feel like there are bugs under my skin. Must.. resist... Aw, screw it. Maybe just one..

No worries mate, I thought about that after I posted it. Do we posters have the ability to do that? i.e. insert a 'View entire post' link?

I wonder what Centrelink would say if they knew I spent my entire fortnight allowance at Juno.

Anyone playing anywhere this Friday? I have a night off and a mate down from Brisbane to show around town.

Ben James.

Ben Ben Ben! What ARE you doing? Well at least your choices are good...

I've already ordered the Lee Cabrera choon with Jesse Garcia Rmx... you may also wish to check out a chilled Jesse Garcia remix of Harry Choo Choo Romero's "Mongobonix" (also with Milk n Sugar Rmx). The Aviators/Cassius choon "Violence 2004" is a must.... it is massive, just ask the Moskva girls... 3am works really well too. The Andy Funk choon sounds nice, but I didn't order it, I'd rather check it for "free" first, then if it works, I may use my discretion in purchasing it...emphasis on "may"... try before you buy...

In terms of ordering choons, you'll soon see how many choons I have received over the last few weeks, when Adelaide airwaves get saturated with new house and tribal beats... I've got them all already, but thought I'd hold off releasing them for a little while longer. After all the June 2004 chart will be coming soon... we are talking in the vicinity of about 20 tracks... so you better start saving my son!

insert Ben James in a foetal position here

Mobin is playing at Garage soon (I think)... but will be heading overseas for a superstar dj tour of China and Europe... hopefully Mobin will post sumtin soon! So doesn't look like there will be a Mobin & Bill gig for a little while

Re your promotion - just post it under "News"... I have no problem superstar House DJs (like yourself) posting where you are playing. It's no secret that we have respect for you...

PS we are still waiting for you to get yourself into the Fresh studio! Kwik!

PSS why aren't you playing at Moskva this week? Trying to get myself to come in and see you play again and laugh in an evil Bill way (and occasionally scream out "CHEESE!" and sarcastically say "I haven't heard this choon before!"). Seriously though, you are one of only 2 or so House DJs that we make an effort to come and see.... Reminds me I have to hassle your bosses to give me a gig sometime too... hmmm

What am I doing? I'm celebrating! (none / 0) (#6)

It's the `post exam I deserve this' attitude. To be honest the finances aren't all that bad at the moment. Been getting a bit of work so....

I can't believe you mentioned that `Mongobonix' tune. After I finished my exam today, I decided to treat myself to a new tune or two... and went off digging the crates at a suburban record store. I flicked past a Subliminal cover, and almost didn't pick it up; I haven't dug many Subliminal tunes. (`Disco babes from Outer Space' and `Just Can't Get Enough' were the last ones I bought I think. Ugh.) Anyway, the name Mongobonix hinted of a promise of bongos, so I gave it a listen.

Mas-Pito is the most insane track I've heard in ages! CHOON as Bill would say!

I totally love it. How long has this tune been around for? It was a second hand record, looks about a few years old. I can't believe I hadn't heard of it. It's got the sexiest sax solo I've ever heard. Stomps on "We All Love Sax" as far as I'm concerned. Big call...but this tune is gorgeous. Anyway, can't wait to give it a test run. I can't stop listening to it at home. Can you recommend any other similar tunes of the yesteryear I may have overlooked?

Anyway so is Mongobonix the artist or tune title? From my record it appears it's the artist, but you're mention of it suggested it was the title.

Looks like Mobin is indeed playing this Friday. Game on!

As for the June Chart; my Credit Card and I await it in fear.

Re: PS I'm on holidays now, so I'll come in and keep you company when Mobin goes on holidays so you don't get lonely. It can get awfully cramped in that little shoe box studio with too many heads.

Re: PPS I am playing at Moskva this week! I only play Saturdays...and just mentioned I have Friday off. See the `News Section' for details! Gasp! Thanks for the compliment.

It's from 1999 - subliminal #20. I have a copy of this, and totally agree. Top choon! However the groove is a little sluggish for today's tribal style beats, and the vocal 'MONGOBONICS' every five seconds gets a bit old. It reminds me a bit of Mobin's redo of 'let it ride' by sgt slick - now *that's* a monster sax stormer..

To the guy moaning MONGOBONIX every 5 seconds...SOD OFF! Now that you've pointed it out it's like a dagger in my heart everytime I hear it. I got a bit caught up in the moment.

The beats are awfully sluggish, but does Subliminal know any other way? Luckily it's an old second hand copy so the record is weathered and dusty too! Yay!

Oh well I'll chuck in the mix anyway. 5 years behind the times.

Night.

Absolutely. You'll notice when you do a post that there are 2 boxes. Just put the section for the main page in the top box, and the rest in the bottom box. Easy as!

Ben, obviously you are haven't taken our advice from last time either See Rants 23 and 24 May 2004 . As stated, you are bordering on insanity. You are not mentally capable of appreciating the full ramifications of what you are doing when buying choons online. Hopefully the car rego for your Sigma, your licence, your overdue phone bills and gas bills dating back to December last year have all been paid, and the creditor's are no longer banging on the door, and your no longer eating scraps of food out of garbage cans........ if not, ask the Moskva people to start paying you more - you know you deserve it! Or you can set up a collection tin on the corner of the console... : P

Ok...this is going to sound pathetically sad, but...

Can you get email updates when new comments and posts are made on Soulgood? It would save me checking the site every few hours. (Gosh that sounds pathetic.)

Yes I'm horribly bored and on holidays. Somehow I guess I'd just feel like less of a loser getting an email notice and checking the site, rather than endlessly hitting refresh while I waste my life away waiting for my tunes to arrive and surf for new ones.

Ben James.

P.S. If you thought I had any self respect left, I've started watching Big Brother. Monica. Swoon.

1. Crispian, don't forget to set up the SoulGood chat forum while you are at it, the banner across the top, the SoulGood limited edition computer game, the SoulGood merchandise range (including orthonodontic sandals : P), the SoulGood high horse, the SoulGood range of food products for the lactose intolerant... "SoulGood on your cereal...", the SoulGood widget, the SoulGood anti-trance device, the SoulGood book about the history of everything called "Last Night SoulGood saved my life"... that will keep you busy for the next couple of days.

2. Mongobonix - Another name for Mr Choo Choo Romero. My preference is his tune "I will" featuring Inaya Day (c2000). Basically same choon as one of Mr Choo Choo's releases on Beats Vol 1 or 2... I used to drop the a capella of "finally" by Kings of Tomorrow (Sandy Rivera) over the top of it and people used to freak, especially at the Scumby in Waymouth. Not sure why the choon me referred you to is called Mongobonix - probably a mistake by Juno crew... not the first time.

3. We all love sax - Tim Deluxe c2001: wikkid sax track that competed for sax track of the year with Let it Ride - Sgt Slick (Mobin Master Rmx). Very noisy and loud track, best result is to key mix it given the "short arrangement" at the end being not facilitative of the typical Fragos 10 minute mixes.

4.The Fresh FM studio is cramped even if one person is in there, given the size of everyone's ego (Bill and Mobin are no exception). You'll be fine..

5. As for Mongobonix being spoken every "5 seconds"... just do a re-edit in true Mobin Master style. Grab the track, run it through Logic or similar, chop it, craft it, stick it, add a couple of filters, bounce it, burn it and bob's your mother's brother.... and the geezer who usually says "izold!" will then say "rrrrrrremix!"

6. Going shopping at "suburban" record stores (I assume MTME Blair Athol) doesn't help your condition young Ben! Those vinyl pushers will try and sell you anything. Tell Moskva to get in some CDJ 800s or 1000s, and we'll sort you out (and vice versa) with some decent "izold" stuff... may save you a quid or 2.

7. See you in the studio!

Re: 2 - Cumby! What goes on down there these days? Has the whole Cumby vibe shifted to the Kings Head? I used to like that place...kinda like a house party in someone else's house.

Re: 6 - Those guys down at MTME are like dealers giving junkies a cheap fix. It's not quality but it gets you through the day. Still, he only charged me $7.50 a pop. Cheap and nasty.

I'm still figuring out how the new release section down there has trashed vinyls covered with more fingerprints than the LAPD check in desk...and torn vinyl covers...not to mention numberous price tags overlapping.

Re: CDJ 800s - Has Soulgood had the whole 'CDs versus Record' debate? Could be up there with the 'DJing as an artform' thread!
I suppose we could extend the debate to 'CDs versus Records versus Final Scratch'.

Let the war begin.

Re: 7 - I'll email you on that @freshfm email soon. Sunday nights though I'm involved in a amatuer drama group...and we're working a bit overtime at the moment. Yes I'm a thespian too.
Please don't tell anyone.

Mobin and I used to play at the Scumby all the time until mid-last year. Unfortunately, times change and maybe it is not as good as places like Moskva, Garage, Savvy.... haven't been too Scumby for a while, and Kings Head has so much potential if only the set up was right....

Ben, don't waste your money, I'm sure Mobin, Crispian and I will be able to sort you out with some choons... $7.50 way too much, when you can get it for free (take two!)... and many of their new releases are not new releases... still you might get lucky and find a rare gem, but come shop with us first

If you have listened to SoulGood over the last year or so (in particular the interviews) you will note that we usually ask our guests the question of vinyl & cds. Many internationals: Martin Solveig, Armand van Helden, Roger Sanchez, Junior Jack, Kid Creme and other superstars Mobin Master, Mark John and Supafly/Amen UK tour with predominantly CDs. The consistent comments are:
1. It is not the format but how the music sounds.
2. Pioneer (CD 800, 1000) and the new Technics CD player are awesome and replicate what turntables do, plus more (like looping, then half looping, then quarter looping to great effect).
3. Touring with CDs allows you to tour with well over 10 times the amount of music.

Note: I interviewed Armand about this recently and hopefully the interview will be aired soon.

Personally, I own a CDJ 1000 and love it. I do not like (at all) the Pioneer series released prior to the 1000 or the 800, purely given their inherent ability to skip and stuff up and the lack of appropriate features.

Final scratch is a good idea, but the platform is not stable and the program does not allow the music to be manipulated to my liking. The quality of the output is not that great either.

I much prefer doing what Mobin specialises in; making re-edits of favourite tracks and playing them out on CD. Martin Solveig specifically mentioned doing this too when we interviewed him earlier this year.

My thought is that it is useless to describe the discussion as a CD vs Vinyl debate as it misses the point - it is about the music, the quality of it, being able to access it and being able to promote it and rinse it to the massive. As Joey Negro says, "Must be the Music..."

How can you be amateur and a thespian??? Thespian hey.... don't Thespians come from somewhere in Greece? Thespia? It's all Greek to me... I won't tell anyone...

I went through a Cumby phase...although I just remember seeing Ezee-G, Josh, and Scott S I think his name is... you guys came after that group? It was a while ago...maybe over a year ago.

As for getting tunes for free - do you mean playing them on CD or Promos?

thes·pi·an    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (thsp-n)
adj.
Of or relating to drama; dramatic: thespian talents.

It doesn't make reference to amatuer or professional...just talents! Hrm maybe I fail on that account.

Enjoy your weekend guys. I'll enjoy mine! My 15 new tunes just arrived from Juno today! Yay!

Mobin & I were there before and during the Ezee G and Scotty Sheridan "era" - we tend to claim it was "Mobin's" era.... early 2002 - mid 2003. on the subject of Scott S, he's an awesome DJ... like him as he's not afraid to experiment, plays wiikid choons, is lactose intolerant, and finds percussive house choons that I don't even know.. maximum respect. Unfortunately haven't seen him play for a while *mental note*. ... aah those were the days!
