What do you mean, you don't know Bill and Mobin?

On Friday night, I was out with a small number of female business colleagues including one from interstate showing them around...

When I turned up to the door at Moskva there was a line, so I spoke with the door girl and used my "I am a friend of Bill Fragos and Mobin Master card, I understand that they are not playing tonight, but can we be included in the VIP line to gain quick entry". To which she was very polite and said yes.
10 mins later when we got to the front of the line the door monkey decides that the venue is too full and he is unable to let us in. To which I use the "I am a friend of Bill Fragos and Mobin Master card for the second time, I understand that they are not playing tonight, but we are happy to wait until people leave so we can get in". (At this point I would like to recognize the importance of venues being licensed for a certain number of individuals for safety reasons and the comfort of other patrons, so I am not undermining the policy and law).

However the Door Monkey responds to me, quote "Bill Fragos has never played here and never will".

WHAT??
How fucking rude. Sure turn me away for being too busy, but do not give me that, about one of Adelaide finest house DJ's that has played the venue several times.
In fact Door Monkey - if you are reading this - here is are photos of Bill playing the venue a few months ago http://www.soulgood.com/story/2004/4/26/164913/268

The Door Monkey said that I could take it up with the "Owner". The best the "Owner", (who I did not recognize, probably a .3% share holder), could tell me, was that if I do not move on he would call the police. Seriously, I had thought that door attitude was gone, but obviously small dick syndrome is alive and well in the world of Door Monkeys.

Anyway we went back to Garage, where we should not have left and had an excellent night - hats off to Jamie and Ben again!

In the mean time, if Moskva don't know who you guys are then I guess they probably won't want you attracting the crowds you do in the future. Especially on the nights when they are dead and you play at 1am and just by coincidence the venue fills up.

Moskva - over it!

Geoff,

Thank you for making us aware of your incident. I was actually at Moskva from about midnite on that night (not playing) and left around 1am.

Note: I had a big day coming up the next day (today) digital camera shopping, some work to do (I'm here now) and a big gig/night anticipated at Savvy tonight, as well as not having felt well over the last couple of days (cold). I was in lovely company though...

What is funny about your story is that when I was inside I had a quick chat with the ever polite and lovely Sarah (whom I understand to be one of the owners). We always say hello to each other and always exchange pleasantries.

So I am not sure with whom you spoke (I note that Eddie was not working at the door) and it is unfortunate that some door staff in Adelaide are not aware of certain people who are in the industry. Then again, David Morales was once rejected at the door of a large nightclub in Ibiza by a "door girl" who did not recognise him (face and name!). Maybe "door staff" need to do a training course or something....

But what makes your story so compelling is that it appears that the "door monkey" knows very well who Mobin and I are... very interesting. The only other owner I am familiar with is Sarah's partner Ben, who I believe DJed after my set to which you referred (thanks for posting a link to the photos for ease of reference). I am not sure who else is an owner, and certainly I do not understand why any door staff would hold such a opinion, considering the response we received last time we performed at Moskva.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this one....

Vodka incident unfolds... (none / 0) (#2)

First of Bill, I missed you by a few minutes apparently. Bumped into a friend of yours (ours) who often frequents the dance floors at Vodka/Savvy who told me I'd just missed you!

Geoff, I'm sorry you couldn't get in last night. It was a fun night, with Ezee G playing 12-2, and myself playing 2-5.

I'm sorry you got the reception you did at Moskva, and from the limited information of your post it seems you appreciate good house music. I've played there every weekend since Decemeber last year, so I hope if you mention my name they'd let you in! Sure we haven't met, but anyone who appreciates good house music is more than welcome. I can't stress how much I appreciate those who seek out and enjoy the finer sounds in house music.

Feel free to mention yourself as a friend of me (DJ Ben James) and I hope the girls will let you in. It's a sad state when house lovers are turned away. No offence to Bill and Mobin, it's obviously poor that they didn't remember them. I do know however that several regulars were away last night, and perhaps the door staff was temporarily replaced for the night. Don't quote me on that though...

I hope you haven't been turned of Moskva for life. We're still pushing out some new and fresh tunes. Sorry again on behalf of Moskva. I hope I'm not out of line saying this, but you should take up the opportunity to speak to the owners if the door person is going to suggest that. They are all reasonable people (yes Sarah is one of the owners Bill) and I'm sure they'd see reason.

Ben James.

P.S. Bill you haven't replied to my pleas to get on the door list, so I'll hopefully make it past the Draconian security and see you tonight at Savvy!

Sorry, my name was indeed on the door with ample space for my running partners. Thanks for that Bill I appreciate it.

On a lighter note...last night:
<me> Hi, just wondering if Bill put any names down on the door tonight?
<Door staff> Who's Bill?
<me> Bill Fragos.
<Door staff> Who's that?
<me> He's DJing here tonight.

+_+

The disease is spreading.

P.S. Geoff I just reread your post and noted you did in fact speak to the owner. Sorry. Not sure what's going on.
