Ok it's gone on long enough....
What are the words to Soulmagic - Soulmagic?

I can't for the life of me figure out the second line. (I think I have the first line right!?)

It's something like 'I can't believe in no magic...
for this love I feel today?
gonna love him anyway?

Someone please put me out of my misery.

Ben James.

I've used Google for hours a day.
I've posted on the Soulfuric website, Soulmagic himself has replied and doesn't know the lyrics.
I've emailed ID&T, the record label that brought out the Migs remixes...they have no idea.
I've hunted for the original tune by Brief Encounter.
I've joined dozens of chat rooms asking.

Please tell me Bill.

I'll be your friend.

My guess is 'I can't even do magic...gonna love and get away....'

I am not jivin' you this time, but I was told last year that the lyrics were:

"I can't even do magic, for the love 's in the lamp"
I know it sounds very very strange, but apparently the orginal track from which it is sampled has fairly bugged out lyrics.

I might have to ask Dave Collins (the legendary soulfather who hosts Beats 'n' Pieces every Sunday Morning on FreshFM from 11am til 1pm) about it (to confirm) cos the I believe the original is a lot slower (an "older" soul/funk record) and might actually be a male vocal, and the sample is pitched up and cut up.

Are you satisfied?!!!!

"ok...i can't hear all of it...but here goes:

I put the lines that you hear in Soulmagic together from to sentences that
have nothing to do with eachother in the track I sampled from.

Original:
I am not a genie ,
???????????????
I can't even do magic,
or pull rabbits from a hat now

....and then it goes on to end in "I'm only human"...and so on.

Soulmagic/soulmagic:
I can't even do magic
???????????????

Sorry but that's as close as I get - can't hear what that second line
is??...maybe some of you english speaking people can figure it out from the
text above, when listening to the track.

best
Morten

Maybe a little bit late, but I think I figured out the second line. Just listened to it closely for the first time and i think it is: "... or Aladdin and / in the lamp ..."

Make that: "Aladdin in the lap..." (lap of luxury that is).

Bill posted "I am not jivin' you this time, but I was told last year that the lyrics were:

"I can't even do magic, for the love 's in the lamp"

From what I found out (emails to Morten Trust etc) he is 100% right.

The reason the lines don't seem to make sense is that the producer's native language is not English, but the words are sampled from an Enlish track and the chosen words were deemed to simply "sound nice together". The two lines of Soulmagic are lines 1 and 3 of a verse from an original track. Line 2 of that verse would link lines 1 and 3 together = hence why they sound a bit odd in Soulmagic.

It would be a bit more romantic if the second line was something like "gonna love him anyway", unfortunately it's not.

Still an amazingly gorgeous track though.

Aladdin (none / 0) (#11)

Just listened to it again, and it's definitely not 'for the love's in the lamp'. Above that, a line like that wouldn't make sense at all in Brief Encounter's 'Human', for if it was 'for the love...' the song would start like this:

I am not a genie
For the love's in the lamp
I can't even do magic
Or pull the rabbit from a hat now

I think the following makes much more sense:

I am not a genie
Or Aladdin in the lap
I can't even do magic
Or pull the rabbit from a hat now

Those four lines all indicate that the one singing the song is 'only human'. A line like 'for the love's in the lamp' doesn't fit in at all.

First line mentions genie.
Second line mentions lamp.
Genie lamp lamp genie.

Seems to fit in to me.

I agree that 'genie' and 'lamp' fit together, but that's not what I meant. What I meant to say was, that a line like 'for the love's in the lamp' as a whole doesn't fit in. And even if it did fit in, it still just isn't the second line.

It's very easy to find out for yourself, just listen to Brief Encounter - Human with headphones on and you'll hear very clearly that it's definitely not 'for the love's in the lamp'.

I won't say that I'm 100% sure about the 'Aladdin in the lap' line, but it's much closer to what you can hear and makes much more sense.

I can't believe in no magic, but the love that im giving For a more poetic and less selfabsorbed version, you may believe in this one: I can't believe in no magic, but the love that I've been given :-)
